Carved Chalice Vase in Solid Oak, France, circa 1930–1950

Some pieces appeal less through overt singularity than through the self-evident balance of their proportions. This solid oak chalice vase belongs to that family of quiet objects whose presence naturally commands an interior.

Entirely turned and hand-carved, it has an architectural silhouette punctuated by a frieze of rosettes, recalling both the vocabulary of European folk art and certain Arts & Crafts or Scandinavian vernacular productions from the first half of the 20th century. Without belonging to a clearly identified movement, it shares their attention to material, hand craftsmanship and the accuracy of proportion.

The oak, selected for its particularly expressive grain, has developed a warm, deep patina over the decades. Fine shrinkage checks visible on the stem are testament to the natural ageing of the solid wood and contribute fully to its authenticity. They are stable and do not affect the piece’s strength or use.

An anonymous object whose quality lies above all in the mastery of its making and the balance of its volumes.

In very good original condition, with a beautiful old oak patina. A few fine shrinkage checks and signs of use consistent with the age of the piece contribute to its character.
