Created during the European modernist explorations of the 1920s and 1930s, this side table presents a particularly pared-back, almost constructivist composition, built from elementary forms.
Its circular walnut-veneered top rests on only two supports: a broad curved panel forming a semi-cylinder, and a vertical blade of ebonized wood. The dialogue between the enveloping volume and the straight line creates a graphic, sculptural silhouette.
The contrasting use of walnut and black, together with the reduction of the design to a few clearly legible volumes, recalls certain Dutch modernist explorations of the same period—particularly those associated with Willem Penaat—without allowing for an attribution.
A rare and sculptural occasional table, ideal beside an armchair, as a bedside table, or as a display pedestal.
Very good vintage condition. The top shows fine scratches and superficial marks, visible under raking light or upon close inspection, as shown in the final photograph, but unobtrusive in normal light. There are light traces of old woodworm activity in places. The structure is sound and stable.
Dimensions: Ø 52 cm × H 49.5 cm.
