Pair of carved wooden wall consoles

Inspired by the Rocaille decorative vocabulary, this pair of carved wooden wall consoles reinterprets the emblematic scallop-shell motif in a powerful yet pared-back manner.

The deeply carved relief, generous volumes and visible traces of handwork give the pair a sculptural presence that goes beyond their purely decorative function. Their aged white paint, worn over time, reveals the wood in places and subtly emphasises the relief, reinforcing their authentic character.

Presented as a pair, they may hold a small sculpture, ceramic, vase or collectable object, while constituting an architectural element in their own right. Their aesthetic works as naturally in a classical interior as in a contemporary setting, where they bring texture and depth.

An early work, probably 19th century, reflecting fine craftsmanship and a long history.

In good vintage condition. Old painted patina with wear, chips and irregularities consistent with the age of the pieces. A few wood shrinkage splits do not affect their structural soundness. The hanging fittings on the reverse appear to be later additions.
