Incised and stained wood panel depicting two junks sailing through a rough sea, signed R. Hervieu in the lower right corner and probably created circa 1940.
Two large sailing vessels with red sails dominate the composition. To the left, a natural rock arch and a small boat on the horizon complete this maritime scene, most likely inspired by the Far East.
The simplified, incised forms are rendered in flat areas of colour, within a restrained palette combining deep reds, dark greens, greys and golden-beige tones. The sharply defined waves, stylised clouds and emphasis on silhouettes recall Art Deco illustration, Japonism and the modernist decorative arts of the interwar period.
The panel is presented in a wide period moulded wood frame, patinated in beige and gold tones.
The surface displays an overall patina, fine scratches, several small marks and occasional areas of wear to the painted finish. The frame also bears signs of age and use. The piece nevertheless remains in good overall condition and retains all of its graphic presence.
Dimensions without frame: 55 × 38.5 cm
