Large Makonde floor lamp in carved wood, made in East Africa during the 1950's.

The exceptionally stem brings together a multitude of figures carved in the round and in high relief. Seated figures, musicians, carriers and family groups overlap and intertwine in a particularly dense composition. At the top, a prominent carved head forms the transition to the light source, while the broad circular base extends the narrative through an array of figures and scenes worked in bas-relief.

The composition belongs to the tradition of Ujamaa sculptures, also known as “Trees of Life”, developed by Makonde carvers in Tanzania and Mozambique. Their vertical accumulation of figures evokes the extended family, communal solidarity and continuity between generations.

In good overall condition. The wood displays a richly nuanced dark brown patina, accentuating the modelling of the bodies and the depth of the carving. Some irregularities, marks and signs of use remain visible, consistent with the piece’s age and handcrafted nature.

The electrical system has been completely renewed by a qualified electrician. Recent cylindrical lampshade in an off-white textile.
