Fish-shaped carved travertine table lamp, attributed to Fratelli Mannelli and probably made in Italy during the 1970s.

Cut from a thick slab of pale travertine, the base takes the highly graphic form of a stylised fish. Two deeply carved curved grooves define its body and meet a broad, flared tail. The simplicity of the profile highlights the natural tonal variations, veining and irregularities of the stone.

This playful yet understated interpretation is characteristic of the decorative objects produced by Fratelli Mannelli in Italy during the 1960s and 1970s. The Florentine workshop is particularly known for its travertine sculptures and lighting featuring animals rendered in deliberately simplified forms.

The lamp is complemented by a tapered off-white fabric shade, which produces a warm light when illuminated.

The travertine displays the natural cavities and variations inherent to the stone, together with a few light signs of use. The shade bears several small stains and age-related marks. A small loss is visible along the lower edge of the lamp holder. The vintage wiring is in working order.

Height of base to lamp holder: 14.5 cm
Overall height with shade: 34.5 cm
Width of base: 15 cm
Depth of base: 5 cm
