Mexican jar in the style of Colima culture

Polychrome terracotta jar, probably made in Mexico and drawing on the forms and decorative vocabulary associated with the ceramics of the Colima culture.

The piece features a generously proportioned globular body surmounted by a tall, slightly flared neck. Its reddish-brown surface, most likely slip-coated and subsequently burnished, is decorated around the shoulder with a geometric frieze painted in natural shades of ochre and terracotta.

The simplicity of the silhouette, the contrast between the pigments and the free-flowing rhythm of the decoration give the jar a presence that feels both archaic and distinctly contemporary. Its form and palette particularly recall ceramic vessels produced in western Mexico during the pre-Columbian period.

In the absence of documented provenance or scientific analysis, however, the piece is presented as an early work inspired by pre-Columbian ceramics and not as an authenticated archaeological artefact.

The surface retains an overall patina, with rubbing, scratches, variations in tone, minor losses to the decoration and dark marks. The rim has a substantial area of loss with a visible old restoration. The piece remains stable and retains a strong decorative presence.
