“Georges V” Armchair by Christian Liaigre
This armchair belongs to a longer history of French furniture, in which the rightness of proportion is inseparable from decorative effect. Behind the apparent simplicity of its silhouette lies a particularly subtle balance: broad wooden sections, gently softened curves, a generous seat, and a structure that favours enduring forms over passing trends.
This ability to transcend periods perhaps explains why Christian Liaigre’s work dialogues so naturally with that of the great French decorators of the 1930s. The limed wood finish—so present in interiors of that period and widely used by Jean-Michel Frank—extends this connection. Without ever resorting to pastiche, the Georges V achieves the same sense of restraint, in which the nobility of the materials alone creates elegance.
At 77 cm wide and, above all, 93 cm deep, it is far more than an occasional chair. It offers an especially enveloping seat, designed for reading, conversation or long hours spent in a living room. This generosity of proportion contrasts with the restraint of its design and contributes to its remarkable comfort.
The ecru linen cushions complement the armchair in a manner faithful to Christian Liaigre’s understated aesthetic. They may naturally be replaced or made to measure according to the future owner’s preferences.
The Georges V is among the most emblematic models designed by Christian Liaigre in the 1990s. It reflects a design language that profoundly marked contemporary French furniture and remains sought after today by collectors and interior designers.
An iconic piece, equally at home in a contemporary interior or alongside Art Deco, modernist or vernacular furniture.
