This armchair was made in France in the 1930s, at a moment when Art Deco was shedding ornament in favour of a more architectural language. Its structure of decisive lines and geometric volumes recalls the work of the Union des Artistes Modernes and anticipates the furniture of René Gabriel.
The chair has recently been upholstered in natural cowhide, whose brown, black and ivory tones complement the warmth of the wood. Far from altering the seat’s character, this intervention gives it a renewed, almost timeless presence, at the intersection of French Art Deco and a more contemporary aesthetic.
The contrast between the rigour of its design and the organic quality of its upholstery creates a singular piece: difficult to categorise, yet immediately compelling.
It will sit equally well in a modernist interior or within a more minimal or brutalist setting.
Original wooden frame. Later restored upholstery with contemporary webbing and foam.
