Exceptional small étagère in pyrographed and stained wood, likely dating from the 1910s to the 1930s.

Rectangular in form, the piece features a symmetrical construction centred around a vertical dividing panel, with open shelving on either side. The top and base, both with generously rounded corners, extend slightly beyond the main structure.

The entire piece is adorned with remarkable floral and bird motifs, executed using pyrography and enhanced with shades of brown, ochre and black. Large stylised flowers with geometric petals intertwine with dark foliage, while the side panels feature birds surrounded by richly detailed botanical compositions.

The decoration continues across the horizontal surfaces. Pyrographed outlines define the motifs, while the shelf edges are finished with a series of fine, evenly spaced grooves. Geometric borders punctuated by small light-coloured details frame the compositions.

This decorative vocabulary, combining stylised flowers, birds and geometric patterns, recalls the work of French decorative artists during the 1910s and 1920s, at the transition between Art Nouveau and Art Deco. In particular, it shares certain stylistic affinities with the floral designs developed by Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann for his textiles and wallpapers, as well as with some of Paul Follot's decorative compositions, in which birds and botanical motifs reflect a similar ornamental sensibility.

Although no attribution can be established, this étagère is a particularly distinctive example of early 20th-century decorative arts, where the richness of the surface decoration transforms a functional piece of furniture into a decorative object in its own right.

Original condition, showing signs of age and use, including scratches, marks, surface wear and some warping resulting from the natural movement of the wood over time. Please refer to the detailed photographs.
