Set of Two Side Chairs and Two Armchairs with Cane Seats and Backs, Attributed to Pascal Mourgue for Triconfort — Circa 1980

This set of four chairs combines a graphic structure with warm materials in a design that remains distinctly modern. Dating from around 1980, their modernity lies in the clarity of their construction: each element contributes to an open composition in which the spaces between the lines are as important as the lines themselves.

Viewed in profile, the sled bases form open frames with softly rounded edges. On the armchairs, the armrests extend this composition, emphasising the balance between horizontal and vertical lines. The gently curved backrests lend softness to the precise geometry.

The cream finish reveals the wood grain and complements the natural tones of the cane. This soft palette gives the set a light, understated yet distinctive presence. These chairs would sit elegantly within a contemporary interior, alongside the clean lines of modernist furniture, the substantial forms of brutalist pieces or the raw, patinated materials of a wabi-sabi setting.

The caning has been replaced throughout, except on the backrest of one side chair, which retains its older cane in a deeper shade.

The wooden frames show signs of use, scuffs and localised wear to the finish. One screw is missing from the right-hand side of one side chair’s backrest, without affecting its structural integrity, as the joints are also dowelled and glued.
