Sculptural chair

Primitive architecture, totem or minimalist sculpture: the formal radicalism of this chair engages in dialogue with traditional craftsmanship.

The oak has been lacquered using techniques associated with French lacquer workshops of the 1930s: several successive coats of lacquer are applied, followed by a long process of hand polishing. This depth of finish gradually reveals the grain of the oak, allowing the material to emerge in the light rather than concealing it.

With its deliberately pared-back architecture, the chair belongs to a lineage that brings together the constructive explorations of André Sornay and the geometric rigour of Willem Penaat. Without belonging to either of these worlds, it shares the same intention: to create emotion through proportion rather than ornament.
