Cast aluminium « Tonneau » chair by Pierre Guariche, France

Two chairs are available. The price is for one chair.

Designed by Pierre Guariche in the early 1950s for Steiner, the Tonneau chair reflects the designer’s exploration of enveloping shell forms and new industrial manufacturing processes.

The cast aluminium version, produced around 1953, belongs to the earliest experiments with the model. Its one-piece, extensively openwork shell, supported by a slender black tubular metal frame, predates the development of the celebrated moulded plywood Tonneau chair, which entered series production in the mid-1950s.

It therefore represents a particularly early and uncommon version of one of the most iconic chairs of post-war French design.

These chairs are distinguished by their remarkable moulded cast aluminium shells, whose fluid, asymmetrical design perfectly illustrates Guariche’s exploration of the relationship between technical innovation and elegance of form.

The large central opening visually lightens the structure and gives the chairs a particularly sculptural silhouette. The shells rest on black-lacquered tubular steel frames, whose slender lines contrast with the more substantial, almost mineral presence of the aluminium.

This combination of materials, unusual in French furniture of the period, makes these chairs particularly distinctive pieces, at the intersection of design and functional sculpture.

Vintage edition. Very good overall condition. Signs of use and a light age-related patina to the aluminium and frames, consistent with their age and contributing to their character.
