Postmodern Yellow and Blue Lacquered Metal Chair, Memphis Spirit, 1980s
Price is per chair. Four examples are available.
Some pieces seem to have been designed like ideograms. This chair is a perfect example: a square, a triangle and a curved line—just a few gestures are enough to create an instantly recognisable silhouette.
Its formal vocabulary evokes the experiments of radical Italian design in the 1980s, when furniture moved beyond functionalism to embrace colour, sign and humour. In spirit, it recalls certain designs by Martine Bedin, Michele De Lucchi and Ettore Sottsass for Memphis. More than a simple seat, each chair appears as a small colourful architecture, somewhere between furniture and sculpture.
The monolithic yellow lacquered metal structure is softened by an ochre tubular arch and a seat upholstered in a fine blue-grey bouclé fabric. Its texture brings an almost domestic note to this highly graphic composition.
Grouped around a table, these chairs create a particularly strong composition. Placed individually, they also function as true decorative pieces—almost like utilitarian sculptures.
A distinctive, joyful and highly collectable proposition, reflecting the creative energy of the late 20th century.
