Modernist Breton Chair in the Seiz Breur Style, Brittany, circa 1930–1940
This solid oak chair illustrates the renewal of Breton decorative arts during the interwar period, when a younger generation of creators sought to modernise regional furniture by simplifying traditional forms and introducing a more geometric decorative language.
The backrest features a lightly carved relief panel with a stylised motif that recalls certain works of the Seiz Breur movement, particularly some creations by Joseph Savina. While no firm attribution can be made, the aesthetic kinship is sufficiently pronounced to place this piece within that distinctive artistic sphere.
Its deliberately restrained, robust structure highlights the beauty of the oak and the quality of the carving. The almost architectural design gives it a surprisingly contemporary presence, somewhere between regional furniture and decorative modernism.
A rare and engaging piece, representative of a particularly fertile period in 20th-century Breton design.
In good overall vintage condition, with a few signs of use and age consistent with the period.
