Art Deco Gondola Armchair, Oak, 1930s

An elegant Art Deco gondola armchair from the 1930s, made of oak and preserved in its original condition.

Its enveloping silhouette, formed by a backrest and armrests flowing in one continuous line, recalls 19th-century Biedermeier furniture, here reinterpreted in the more pared-back vocabulary of Art Deco. The fluted front legs and geometric details of the frame also bring to mind certain pieces influenced by the Vienna Secession.

The armchair retains its original floral-patterned cut velvet upholstery. The fabric’s texture, raised design, weight and stylised pattern are characteristic of interwar furnishing textiles and fully contribute to the charm of the piece. The upholstery stuffing and decorative tacks also appear to be original.

The piece has developed a beautiful patina of use. The wood has a few marks and minor knocks consistent with its age. The fabric shows several small snags and localised areas of wear, visible in the photographs, without compromising its overall presentation. These signs of age contribute to the authenticity of this armchair, preserved in its original state.

A characterful armchair at the intersection of Biedermeier, Secessionist and Art Deco influences, appealing as much for the softness of its lines as for the richness of its original materials.
