Large carved wood panel depicting a hunting scene in a forest, signed RAYMOND DUBOIS (1904-1982) in the lower left corner and probably created circa 1930–1940.
The composition brings together a horseman, several dogs, a stag and a hare amid dense vegetation. The cross appearing between the stag’s antlers also identifies the scene as an interpretation of the legend of Saint Hubert.
The scene is carved in deep relief. Vertical tree trunks, sharply defined foliage and expressive animal figures create a highly graphic landscape, animated by dramatic contrasts of light and shadow.
The simplified volumes, angular carving and almost decorative rhythm of the vegetation place the work within the modernist sculpture of the mid-20th century. Beyond its traditional iconography, the panel has an almost theatrical presence, evoking the world of fairy tales and the forest as much as that of the hunt.
The panel retains its original integral wood frame.
The surface displays an aged patina, with some rubbing, scratches, small marks and variations in tone, mainly on the raised areas. The frame also bears signs of age and use, together with a slight opening at one of the joints. The piece remains in good overall condition.
Overall dimensions: 96 × 51 cm x 4 cm
