Antique patinated plaster bas-relief. C1900

An antique patinated plaster bas-relief reproducing the celebrated Nike Adjusting Her Sandal, one of the masterpieces of Classical Greek sculpture.

Probably made between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this cast belongs to the tradition of reproductions of antiquities produced by museum workshops and schools of fine arts.

The original relief, carved around 410 BC, formed part of the parapet surrounding the Temple of Athena Nike on the Acropolis in Athens. The winged goddess is depicted bending forward, one leg raised as she reaches towards her foot to loosen or adjust her sandal. Her garment falls in deep, fluid folds, simultaneously clinging to the contours of her body and billowing around it. This masterful treatment of “wet drapery” is characteristic of the Rich Style that developed in Athens towards the end of the 5th century BC.

Presented as a reduced-scale fragment, the cast preserves the losses found on the ancient sculpture, including the missing face and parts of the limbs. Its nuanced beige patina, darker within the recesses, accentuates the modelling of the drapery and gives the piece an almost archaeological presence.

Good overall condition considering its age. Irregular patina, marks, light scratches and occasional chips revealing the white plaster beneath. The principal visible losses reproduce the fragmentary condition of the ancient original. Preserved in its aged condition.
