Moulded plaster bas-relief after greco-roman model

Antique moulded plaster bas-relief entitled “Fauns Treading Grapes”, after a Greco-Roman model.

At the centre of the composition, two fauns tread grapes in a vat, holding hands to maintain their balance. To the left, a third figure playing the aulos — the ancient double flute — provides a rhythm for their work, while on the right, another faun carries a basket filled with grapes. The scene brings together the grape harvest, music and the Dionysian world of vines, wine and celebration.

Delicately modelled in low relief, the work is distinguished by its slender figures and the almost choreographic rhythm of its composition. Its ivory-white finish and subtly irregular tones evoke the appearance of an ancient frieze fragment.

Probably made in the early 20th century, this cast belongs to the tradition of reproductions after the Antique produced by sculpture workshops and schools of fine arts. Its hollow construction incorporates two sturdy metal fittings on the reverse for wall mounting.

Good overall condition considering its age. Irregular surface, light staining, signs of age and minor chips. A larger chip is present along the upper edge, close to one of the fittings. The hanging system is stable and functional.
