Solid oak shop counter. C1920

An early 20th-century solid oak shop counter from France, dating from circa 1910–1920.

Although it predates the major decorative movements of the 1930s, this piece already seems to anticipate some of the directions that would shape French furniture in the interwar years. The softness of its volumes and fluidity of its curves recall, several decades in advance, Jean Royère’s early work, in which cabinetmaking becomes almost sculptural.

The interior retains its original layout of drawers, pigeonholes, storage niches and work shelf, reflecting a design in which every detail was conceived for a specific function. This honest, purpose-built construction is part of what gives it such a contemporary presence today.

The counter bears the marks of over a century of use: wear, earlier restorations and minor, stabilised shrinkage splits. It has been refurbished with care to preserve the richness of its patina and the authenticity of its history.

Originally designed for a commercial setting, it would now work naturally as a kitchen island, entrance-hall console, desk, gallery counter or retail fixture. Its architectural presence is enough to define a space, while retaining the restraint and dignity characteristic of the finest trade furniture.

In very good preserved condition. The structure is perfectly sound and fully functional. Signs of use consistent with age, earlier restorations to the top, and minor stabilised shrinkage splits. Keys are missing.
